Once Upon a Time in the Dreamtime (the central theme of the culture of Indigenous Australians explaining the origins of their world), an orphan named Koobor constantly abused and neglected by his clan.
The area was very dry and every night everyone drank before him and he only had never enough water to quench his thirst. He then had to learn to live by eating the leaves of the gum tree full of water, but it was never enough. One morning, when the clan went looking for food, they forgot to hide the buckets of water for the first time in his life, Koobor had enough water to drink. It fills the belly it was ready to burst. Once, his thirst quenched, he realized that his clan would be very angry when he would return. He decided to gather all the buckets of water and hung on a low branch to hide them. Then he climbed into the branches and sang a wonderful song that made the tree grow so that it became the highest in the forest.
the evening, when people from the clan Koobor regained the village, they were exhausted and hungry and soon became very angry when they saw their buckets of water hanging from the tallest tree that was Koobor. They asked him to make buckets stolen, but he refused and told them: "Your turn to be thirsty!". This put them in a huff. Several men climbed the tree, but Koobor made them fall by tapping with the buckets. Two wizards came smarter still high and beat until Koobor and threw his little weary limbs crashed to the ground.
While all were watching, they saw the broken body morph into koala and climb the nearby tree. He then sat in the highest branches and began to leaf chewing gum. Koobor told them: "You can kill me to eat me, but my skin can not be dismembered, nor my bones broken before I'm done. If anyone dares to disobey my mind all the lakes dry up and all rivers, so that everyone will die, and so it will be all the koalas! ".
is why koalas do not need water to stay alive and why Aborigines always respect the order of Koobor when cooking a koala because they fear it will come back and take them all their water, leaving them hungry for ever.
